Tchaikovsky wrote it for the celesta, a keyboard that sounds like tiny bells, and premiered it in The Nutcracker in 1892. The show matches that delicacy. It is one of the darkest shows in the catalog, with the rear turn signals and tail lights picking out the plucked notes one at a time at an unhurried pace, and a good share of the values fade rather than snap.
