The whole show is built on a beat grid. A track with a steady, findable pulse gives every flash something to land on. A track with rubato, heavy swing or no percussion at all leaves the grid guessing, and you can see it: the lights feel adjacent to the music rather than in it. This is the single biggest predictor.
2. Transients, not texture
A light can go from off to full in one frame, which makes it superb at hits and mediocre at swells. Snare cracks, rim shots, staccato synth stabs and plucked strings all read beautifully. Sustained pads, legato strings and a wall of distorted guitar give almost nothing to catch, because nothing about them starts sharply.

3. Contrast between loud and quiet

5. Separation between bass and top end
Different parts of the car answer to different parts of the spectrum, so a mix where the kick, the vocal and the cymbals occupy clearly different bands spreads across the car. A muddy mix, where everything lives in the low mids, lights everything at once.
6. Stereo width
Left and right are analysed separately, and the car has a left and a right side. A mix with real stereo movement gets side-to-side motion out of the box. A mono or near-mono master gets a symmetrical show, which is fine, just less interesting.

They work, but they are a different job, and a show built for a rock track will look wrong on one. A ballad has few transients, so the material is the swell rather than the hit. Slow does not mean boring here. It means the mirrors and doors carry more of the show, because they move on a human timescale and the lights do not have to.
